Wiregrass girls basketball routes Gaither

The Wiregrass girls basketball team defeated the 0-7 Gaither cowboys last Friday night. The lady bulls came off a tough two point loss against Freedom last Wednesday.

This most recent win puts the lady bulls above .500 with a 6-5 record overall. Their standings in the district remain favorable being 5-2. The girls have only lost to two schools in the district, Plant and Leto.

The Bulls scoring was led by sophomore guard, Madison Gant, with a team-high of 13 points; followed by senior guard and captain, Alexis Bolden, with nine points.

Gant credits the majority of her points to free throws opportunities.

“Being aggressive and constantly attacking the basket allowed me to get to the free throw line.   Most of my points came from the charity stripe,” Gant stated.

With a 32 point lead and multiple players with double-digit points, the Lady Bulls proved their strength.

“I think playing as a team and communicating on the floor helped contribute to our teams victory over Gaither. Our team chemistry really shined through,” Bolden recounted.

Coach John Gant is the varsity head coach of the Lady Bulls. Gant felt his team played well overall during this game.

“We played good man-to-man defense and did not allow their guards to penetrate the paint. They had a couple pretty decent guards and we were able to shut down their scoring,” Coach Gant explained.

Coach Gant hopes to continue to see growth in the team as the season progresses.

“As a young team, we are immature. I don’t mean as people, but as basketball players; we have yet to learn what we need to do in certain situations. But that will come as the season progresses,” Gant emphasized.

Coming up, the Wiregrass girls basketball team has a home non-conference game vs. Pasco on Wednesday, December 20.
