Introducing the 2016-2017 Wiregrass boys tennis team
The Wiregrass Ranch Boys Tennis team is poised to make another championship run after a 17-1 record last year. The team is currently on a hot streak after winning their last 7 games.
Destiny Okungbowa (So.), Noah Makarome (Sr.), Gabriel Castillo-Sanchez (Fr.), and Kaniskh Ramesh (Fr.) are all key players that will have a big impact on Wiregrass’ title hopes. When asked on how he expects this season to conclude, Okungbowa had a simple response.
“State championship,” Okungbowa confidentially answered. “Our goal this year is to hopefully win the state championship.”
Coach Wilson seems to agree with Okungbowa.
“Going into the year it was up in the air, but with the group we have right now, I expect to go far and to win our third state championship in four years,” confirmed Wilson.
When inquired as to what the team’s biggest weakness is, it took relatively no time at all to receive an answer.
“Our depth,” Okungbowa quickly replied. This isn’t surprising, of course; both Castillo-Sanchez and Ramesh are both Freshman. Castillo-Sanchez’s older brother and the team’s number one player last year, Sebastian, graduated in 2016, leaving a hole in the team’s morale.
“[Sebastian’s] departure really left the team in a state of doubt over the summer,” Okungbowa explained solemnly. “He was a key player and leader for this team. Without him, we all need to step in and lead in his absence.”
Although this team may be getting younger, there are still some veterans on this roster. Eight seniors are currently on the Boys Tennis team, including Alex Baig, Evan Setley, Jared Abrams, and Will Lovelace. In addition, there are only three freshman and sophomores each that play for the team.
Wiregrass’ next game is March 14th against Hudson. Hudson is playing their first game of the season against Wiregrass. The Bulls are looking to continue their winning streak; they’re currently 7-0 on the season after their victory over Wesley Chapel.
