Bulls basketball tips off.

After a 2-2 start, the boys’ basketball team is looking to begin a three-game week on a positive note against a 1-1 Sunlake Seahawks team in the Bulls’ home opener. The Bulls are coming off a one-win and one-loss week against Hillsborough High School and Wharton High School respectively.

Led by senior captains Joshua Martin and Deshawn Mann along with their leading scorer through four games senior King Gonzalez Jr. averaging 15 points per game, the Bulls have won the last two matchups against the Seahawks, and plan on making it three.

“This should be our game to win, we just have to play our basketball,” Martin said.

The Seahawks are led by their senior captains Roland Sloan and Jeff Ryder who is also the Seahawks’ leading scorer so far averaging 22 points per game. Sunlake is coming off a tough loss against St. Petersburg High School and is looking to bounce back against the Bulls.

Coach Jeremy Calzone has prepared the team for their three-game week as they are set to play Armwood High School and Tampa Bay Tech High School as well.

“Our goal is to win all three games this week and get better every day,” Calzone explained.

The Bulls have emphasized the importance of sharing the ball and rebounding. They are averaging about 34 rebounds per game and plan on working to increase that number.

“As a smaller team we have to work hard to rebound,” senior captain Deshawn Mann said.

As for sharing the ball, the Bulls are looking to score as many points as possible in transition.

“We are looking for kick-out threes, aggressive takes to the basket, and extra swing passes on the perimeter,” Calzone explained.

The team is averaging 70 points per game and plans to continue playing aggressively on offense and defense. After this week, the Bulls hope to see their record increase to 5-2.
