Kansas City Champions
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, in Super Bowl 54.
Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs for winning their first ever Super Bowl, with a final score of 31-20, overcoming a 10-point 4th quarter deficit, the second largest comeback in Super Bowl history. Patrick Mahomes played lights out down the stretch like usual, winning Super Bowl MVP.
Head coach Andy Reid finally won a ring, on the same night as his 222nd career victory. This victory has been long awaited, since he is one of the most respected coaches in the league today.
Chief’s Quarterback Patrick Mahomes finished the game with 315 total yards, three total touchdowns (TDs), and two interceptions (INTs). He has had better games stats-wise, but after his second interception, he could do no wrong, evading pressure from the 49ers defensive line almost every play and picking apart their secondary.
The 49ers were up 20-10 until about six minutes left in the game. The turning point was a 44-yard completion from Mahomes to Tyreek Hill, on the Chiefs first and only deep ball of the night. Tyreek Hill could not be stopped, racking up 105 yards on nine receptions.
Damien Williams is really the unsung hero of this game. From undrafted to Super Bowl champion, he finished with 17 carries for 104 yards with one rushing TD and four catches for 29 yards with one receiving TD. Many thought that he should have been awarded MVP, but I feel both he and Mahomes were deserving.
The Chiefs defense stifled the 49ers late, not allowing a point for the last 17:30 of the game. They were bringing constant pressure, forcing Garoppolo to make a play, and he couldn’t. They strayed away from the run game, since they had to play catch-up late, and that is not their true identity.
Jimmy Garoppolo finished the game with 219 yards, one TD, and one INT. He overthrew Emmanuel Sanders with 1:40 in the game, when Sanders finally got behind the Chiefs secondary, leading to a fourth down in which he got sacked. If he could have converted on that throw, this game would’ve turned out completely different.
Nick Bosa and his fellow defensive linemen played great, forcing pressure on Mahomes, causing him to evade the pocket all game long. Linebacker Fred Warner also had a strong game, with seven tackles and one interception.
Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers head coach and offensive play caller, was outscored 21-0 in the 4th quarter. Shanahan was also the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons during their infamous 28-3 blown lead against the New England Patriots in the 2017 Super Bowl. This has to put an asterisk on his resume, as he has proven that he can not finish in Super Bowls, after having a convincing lead.
Both star-tight ends, Kelce and Kittle were contained, with 43 and 36 yards, respectively. Deebo Samuel, rookie receiver for the 49ers, shined early on as a receiver and a runner. Once he was shut down by the Chiefs, they really struggled to do anything else on offense.
We were given a great game between two great teams, as deserved from what I believe to be one of the best NFL seasons in a while. There was no clear favorite to win the Super Bowl as the season went on and nobody expected this to be the result.
Next year’s Super Bowl will be hosted in our very own Tampa Bay, Florida at Raymond James Stadium for the fifth time ever. The game is scheduled for February 7, 2021 (but is subject to change). It will be the fourth time that the Super Bowl is in the same state in back-to-back years.
