It is an old twist, but one that still gets a lot of people instantly intrigued– time travel; the idea that someone could go back in time and change the course of history.
11.22.63 is a mini series with 8 suspenseful episodes that aired February 15, 2016 on Hulu. It is based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel and is produced by well-known director J.J. Abrams.
Jake Epping, a high school English teacher, played by James Franco, comes across a time portal that only goes back to September 9, 1958. Jake is somehow persuaded to go back in time by diner owner, Al Templeton. Jake spent his whole life believing that changing any historic event, particularly the assassination of JFK, can reshape an entire generation, and now Jake can put that theory to the test.
Peculiar events start taking place throughout the series. The viewer learns that the past does not want to be changed. The course of history causes a turn of events which make this quest a lot more difficult than imagined.
Not only is the acting captivating and the aesthetics tantalizing, but the twists and supernatural elements are truly shocking. Even by watching a short trailer, viewers are drawn into the potential of this series due to the major emotion shown in just two minutes.
Senior Ethan Fletcher stated, “Once I watched the first 10 minutes of the show, I couldn’t stop and ended up binge-watching it over one weekend.”
The viewer gets a good sense of the time period in this show, both visually and in terms of the social landscape. It also does a great job at capturing unique details like the cost of cars, segregation, and domestic violence without being too overwhelming.
11.22.63 is a huge book and would seem very difficult to adapt into a short 8 episode, 8 hour series, but it was managed well. Not many things differ from the book to the film. However, a wide variety of fans do prefer the book over the series. Still, 11.22.63 is a series that moves quickly, and provides enough twists and turns to keep viewers of all calibers interested.
