Most movies that audiences look forward to are the big summer blockbusters; but, there are also films that asks the deep questions about society and how we live our lives. Every once in a while, there is a film that manages to blend the two together so perfectly together, that they are loved by both the critics and the average audience. In 2014 it was Whiplash, in 2016 it was The Nice Guys, and now, in 2017, that film is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.

Director and writer Martin McDonagh, brings forth a perfectly executed comedic drama that manages to entertain a mass audience but also stay relatable and important for many people in today’s ever growing society.

The performances from the entire cast were absolutely outstanding on every level. Frances McDormand is undoubtedly moving as Mildred Hayes as she presents a no nonsense, yet grieving mother. Both Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell play just as dramatic and at times comedic roles as police officers that are completely entertaining to watch. The supporting cast that include: Luke Hedges, John Hawkes, Caleb Landry Jones, and Peter Dinklage, all bring their A-game, making the entire film a perfect ensemble of actors and perfectly written characters.

This is also an extremely well made movie on top of the great acting. The way the setting is shot and the atmosphere created is beautiful and extremely realistic at the same time. The music as well is used effectively as it combines a good original score by Carter Burwell and great selection of country music.

While all the actors give spot on performances, the true star of the movie is the screenwriting and the message the film is presenting. McDonagh, while an incredible director, truly brought this film to life with his script. This has got to be the best screenplay given to us all year as it manages to contain perfectly executed comedy while also carrying even more effective dramatic moments.

Bottom line, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri is one of the best films of 2017. It finds its place with both critics and audiences alike. It manages to deliver a heartfelt story with many comedic moments. This truly is a monumental comedic drama.
