Preview: Winter sports
November is almost here and Fall sports are coming to an end, with many teams currently competing in Regionals and States. While Fall sports are ending, that also means Winter sports are preparing for their upcoming seasons.
Boys Basketball tryouts will take place November 1-2. Last year, the boys went 19-6, making it to the Regional tournament. The boys team will be moving up to district 6A-10 this year, which will bring about a new level of competition. The boys are hoping to make history this year by going even farther, and have their eyes on the state championship.
Wiregrass senior captain, Josh Martin, believes his team has what it takes to succeed.
“If we work together as a team and buy in together, we will definitely surpass what we did last year and make it even further this season,” Martin explained.
Girl Basketball tryouts were held October 25-26. The girls finished the previous season 14-10, winning districts at home against East Lake. The girls lost three seniors last year and Solei Sowell, an upcoming sophomore, plans to take on more responsibility to help solidify her team this season.
“I can provide my leadership skills and help better everyone to their best ability,” Sowell said. “I have improved my skills that will help the team this year.”
Boys soccer held tryouts October 19-21 to form their new team. Last year, the boys won districts against Mitchell and are hoping to go back-to-back this upcoming year. The boys lost 11 key seniors last year, but believe the rising seniors will take on the challenge of fulfilling those roles.
“This year I am hoping to provide leadership as well as many goals and assists to hopefully bring my team to win it all,” senior Aidan Ettouati, soccer captain, said.
Coach Wilson, the head boys soccer coach has high expectations for his team this year.
“The goal is to win a state championship,” Coach Wilson explained. “The expectation is that we will.”
Girls’ soccer tryouts were October 18-20. The girls’ team had a great season last year, winning districts against East Lake and finishing their season 14-6-3.
Senior Captain Natalia Kaminski hopes to help her team make it to Regionals once again this year.
“As a senior captain, I have tried to create a winning attitude for the season, since girls soccer has had so much success in recent past seasons,” Kaminski explained.
The girls head coach, Avery Walker, explained how his team has been preparing for the upcoming season.
“We have been working on general team chemistry at the moment,” coach Walker explained. “Teams that get along tend to do the best so it’s important to build up that chemistry.”
The first home game of the season for Winter sports will be Monday, Nov. 8 as boys soccer takes on East Lake.
