The Wiregrass Ranch boys varsity basketball team defeated the Pasco Pirates 79-42 on Wednesday night in a home inter-conference match-up. They were fresh off of a seven-point victory against Leto Falcons the night before.
Coach Calzone is impressed with his team at this point in the season, and hopes to make a deep run into districts playoff this year.
“The team has really come together and have been playing well lately,” Head coach Jeremy Calzone said.
The first quarter started out slowly, as both teams played a strong defensive game. Midway into the quarter, senior Guard Elijah Howell went on a scoring run to ignite the Bulls’ offense, scoring twenty points to end the opening quarter; the Bulls led going into the second quarter 20-10.
“We were all working hard to get the ball and that’s the type of effort we need to win,” Junior Guard Lucas Pelt explained.
The second quarter of the game looked similar to the first quarter, as the Bulls’ played well offensively as well as on defense only allowing the opposition to score six points. Rebounds were key for the Bulls in the second quarter, helping to increase the score to 42-16.
“Coach always tells us to just crash the glass when people are trying to get the rebound; it allows us to get an easy put back off the glass,” senior forward Logan Ghoumari explained.
The Bulls kept on crashing the glass and maintained solid defense, limiting the transition, and pushing the pace throughout the remainder of the game.
“Every game our goal is to push the tempo and run the floor to get easy fast break points,” Ghoumari explained.
The Bulls limited the Pirates’ momentum all game, which was key to the development of the large lead that the team established.
The Bulls will look to carry on the momentum into there next game, Friday, January 11, against Steinbrenner Warriors at 7:30 pm.
