The Future of Wiregrass Basketball

Fall sports are coming to an end and basketball season is right around the corner.

Wiregrass’ roster has been announced and the Bulls are ready. Coming off of a 12-15 record last year, the Bulls look to improve.

Lead by coach Calzone, the Bulls had a district record of 6-8. Calzone was proud of last years achievements saying, “It was expected, we were young so we knew we were going to have trouble, but we ended up doing pretty well.”

This offseason, Wiregrass received many transfers and Calzone is looking forward to the new season.

“I expect to do better, a lot more talent has come in so we should have a pretty successful season,” Said Calzone.

Calzone is also expecting senior Devin Wilson to do well this season. At shooting guard, Wilson lead the team in scoring last year and played a huge part in most of their wins. Wilson is also looking to improve from last season.

“I feel we could have some better as a team, but we maximized our opportunities,” Said Wilson.

Looking ahead, Wilson is confident in his new team.

“This is going to be a really fun season” Said Wilson. “I’m really excited to play with the new transfers we have and of course the returning players from last year.”

Wilson is not only confident in not only his team, but his coach as well.

“Calzone is one of if not the best coach in the district,” Said Wilson.

New transfer, senior JD Hannah will be playing power forward and has come to Wiregrass looking for nothing but success.

“I came to Wiregrass to play at a higher level and show colleges I can compete at the next level, and I came to win,” Said Hannah. “With so many more kids here than my last school, I’m looking forward to the crowd and I’m confident we can finish top 2 in the district.”

Hannah is excited about playing with all of his new teammates, especially Wilson.

“His inside game and speed compliments my slow outside fundamental approach and I really think we can be successful,” said Hannah.

The bulls are in a tough district, but Calzone believes the team can be successful.

“Sickles is going to be our toughest competitor but I’m confident in the team,” Said Calzone.

The Bulls will have their first regular season game on Thursday November 17th, as they take on Lakewood Ranch.
