Top classic Halloween movies on Disney Plus
Due to COVID-19, families are struggling to find something to do that is fun while also staying safe this year for Halloween. With the uncertainty of trick-or-treating and parties, Disney Plus offers a solution with a wide variety of classic Halloween movies, shorts, and series that are funny, scary and even sometimes surprisingly heart warming available on their platform. Here are the top three Halloween movies to watch on Disney Plus this year.
“The Nightmare Before Christmas,” is a 1993 classic animated film directed by Henry Selick. It allows the audience to experience the best of both worlds, by showcasing the joys of Christmas and the horrors of Halloween. This movie is a stop-motion film, which took over 3 years to create.
Not only is this film a stop-motion but it is also a musical, and is comprised of many songs that allow viewers a glimpse inside the character’s true feelings. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” has an 8/10 on IMDb and currently an 95% from strict critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
“‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ is my all-time favorite Halloween movie, mainly due to childhood nostalgia and I love the character Sally,” Chemistry teacher Courtney Marecki said.
Coming up next, receiving a 6.9/10 on IMDb and an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, is “Frankenweenie,” which tells the story of a young scientist, Victor Frankenstein and his best pal, Sparky. The special relationship between a little boy and his beloved dog is what shines through the most in this film, which is a cute take on the original “Frankenstein” films.
This film was created by Tim Burton, famous for his goth-like characters and their unique facial expressions. “Frankenweenie” is a black and white movie, reminiscent of the older Halloween movies, darkening the mood perfectly. This animated film is both eerie and heartwarming, and something all ages can enjoy.
“Halloweentown,” is another great movie to watch on Disney Plus if you enjoy suspense and heroism. This fun and exciting movie allows viewers an insight on the life of a not-so-normal family that discovers they all have magical powers.
“Halloweentown” is full of all the spooky characters normally seen in scary movies with elaborate costume and makeup designs, but ironically they have everyday jobs and are polite citizens. “Halloweentown” also includes many special effects as well, like witches flying on brooms.
“‘Halloweentown’ gets you into the Halloween Spirit because it incorporates family and all the aspects that embody Halloween,” Freshman Nicole Diman explained.
This classic currently has a 6.8/10 on IMDb and an 80% from critics in Rotten Tomatoes. This movie was turned into a series that is comprised of four movies in total, all of which are streaming on the Disney Plus platform.
Halloween is quickly approaching, so be sure to check out these movies if you are looking for a fun and safe way to spend the holiday.
